Since 2007 the Foundation for Internet Development has conducted researches related to special features of perception and use of ICT by Russian children and teenagers, parents and teachers, it studies processes of socialization in the information society.

Since 2007 the Foundation for Internet Development has conducted researches related to special features of perception and use of ICT by Russian children and teenagers, parents and teachers, it studies processes of socialization in the information society.

Year by year we are improving methods, geographical spread of the researches is constantly expanding, and coverage of respondents is being increased. Due to these facts, today we have at our disposal the latest data on intensity and nature of Internet activity of children and teenagers, basic risk factors that we have to face within the boundlessness of the Internet, and actual level of their mastering of various digital technologies.

Digital competence of Russian teenagers and their parents (2013)

Russian survey of digital competence of teenagers and their parents was held in 2013 by the Foundation for Internet Development and Psychology Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University with support of Google.

Objective of the survey is to identify a level of digital competence of Russian teenagers and their parents, and to study components of digital competence (knowledge, skills, motivation, and responsibility) and its spheres (information, communication, consumption, technological sphere) of children and their parents.

The survey covered 1,203 teenagers aged 12 to 17 and 1209 parents of children of this age living in 58 cities of 45 regions of 8 Russian federal districts with population of 100 thousand people and over. The poll was held by Yurii Levada Analytical Center according to special methods developed the Foundation for Internet Development.

Russian Kids online (2010)

For the purposes of effective building of the information society, it is necessary to understand who will be their constructors in some years. First researches of the Foundation conducted in the country were dedicated to these issues. Along with, comparative researches in global context allow to realize special features of the information society forming in Russia, to forecast its prospects and possible problems. At the same time by the beginning of 2010 in Russia not a single survey related to this problem allowing to make reliable comparison with other countries was conducted.

To make international comparative analysis the Foundation for Internet Development and the Psychology Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University as independent members entered EU Kids Online II , research project that was held in 2009¬¬-2011 and covered 25 European countries, Russian and Australia.

Coordinator of the project is London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE), Media and Communication Department. Managers of the project are Professor Sonya Livingstone and Doctor Lesley Haddon. The project was finance by Safe Internet Program of the European Commission.

Objective of the project is to study children’s and parents’ experience of facing Internet threats and safe use of the Internet, new online technologies in Europe and other countries of the world.

In each member country children aged 9 to 16 and their parents were interviewed to receive accurate, suitable for cross-cultural comparison quantitative data related to use of the Internet in Europe.

The survey is Russia was conducted basing on general methods developed within scopes of EU Kids Online II project. Questions covered different problem areas: Internet literacy of children and their parents, their awareness of online risks and ways to protect against them, their personal experience of security in the Internet, problems of forming identity in cyberspace. For the purposes of the Russian project, survey methods were translated, culturally adapted and validated by employees of the Foundation for Internet Development and the Psychology Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Survey sample included 1025 children aged 9 to 16 and their 1025 parents. The survey covered 11 Russian regions: Zabaykalie Territory, Kemerovo, Kirov regions, Moscow, Moscow region, Republic of Dagestan, Komi Republic, Rostov region, Saint Petersburg, Saratov, and Chelyabinsk regions.

My safe network (2009)

What Internet threats are faced by Russian children and teenagers, and how they are perceived by them? How dangerous is local cyberspace? What are ways to protect children and teenagers against risks and dangers of the Internet? These are the essential questions faced at the present stage of the information society development in Russia which should be addressed by experts, researches, parents, and teachers. A series of researches held by the Foundation for Internet Development allowed to make social and psychological analysis of children and teenagers’ vision of risks and dangers of the Internet, awareness of their parents and competence of teachers with respect to security of children in the Web.

4336 teenagers aged 14 to 17, 816 parents and 1003 teachers from 18 Russian regions participated in the survey.

Internet in children’s eyes (2007)

Interaction in the school community is not limited by academic activity and non-formal contacts of children. Modern schoolchildren more and more often address Internet resources having different motives: search of information, entertainment, communication, etc.

What is schoolchildren’s vision of the Internet? How would they like to see it? How to optimize the Web and to make it more friendly and safer for schoolchildren? — Internet in children’s eyes Research gives answers to these and many other questions.

Within scopes of this research project, 460 respondents, pupils of Moscow and Moscow region schools, were interviewed.
